BCCA Agility Committee - 2006 - 2007

As a member of the Agility Committee since February of 1997, I have been in contact with most of you and have enjoyed hearing your stories and publishing your statistics. After conversations with many of you, I founded the Beardie Agility Diehards (BAD) in April of 1997. With Karen Norteman's help we started a website called "We're BAD," which is home to 457 Agility Beardies, and initiated a Beardie Agility List so that we can communicate with one another about training tips and trial successes. Our organization is well known in the Agility world and many wish that their breed clubs had such a fabulous, award-winning, fun-filled website and the sense of community that we enjoy. In July of 2000 I was asked by Rosemary Schroeder to be the BCCA Acting Agility Chair and in September I accepted the appointment as your BCCA Agility Co-Chair. I am also the Agility Chair for the Northern California Bearded Collie Fanciers, where our 47 Agility Beardies have earned 650 Agility titles. We had a very successful first Regional Specialty Agility Trial on March 9, 2001 at Nancy Gyes' Power Paws, a second on April 19, 2002 with Candy Gaiser, a third on April 18, 2003 with Ann McQuillen, a fourth on April 15, 2004 with Kera Holm, a fifth on April 21, 2005 with Pam Richcreek, and a sixth on April 20 2006,with Cindy Macklin. Together Libby and Jack have trained three agility Beardies, Skye, Caper, and Ceilidh. Both Skye and Caper are Versatility Excellent Beardies and Caper has won several Highs in Trial both at the Nationals and the NCBCF Regionals.

Joanne Williamson, our BCCA Agility Co-Chair, has been working with the Agility Committee since 1997, keeping track of all of the AKC legs and titles earned by our Beardies. She has been instrumental in working out the point systems for all of our BCCA Awards. Joanne has trained six Agility Beardies, Corey, Sean, Rob, Beau, Belle and Flash. Sean holds the distinction of being the first Beardie to earn the AKC championship, the MACH. Sean, Corey, Rob, Beau, and Flash are all Versatility Excellent Beardies. Sean, Rob, and Belle have taken Highs in Trial at our BCCA Nationals. Sean won the Denia Award for 1998, the Diehard Trophy for 1999 and 2000, and Jumpers Trophy for 1999 and 2000. He also held the distinction of being "top AKC Beardie" in 1999 and 2000.

Karen Barratt has retired as BCCA Agility Co-Chair but remains active on the committee. While acting as agility co-chair, Karen placed four MACHs on Jet and one on Bud!

Since September of 2000 we implemented the BCCA Trophy for over-all accomplishment in AKC Agility, the Diehard Trophy (sponsored by the Beardie Agility Diehards and designed by Chet Jezierski), and the Jumpers with Weaves Trophy in honor of Mirage (sponsored by Beth White and designed by John Stanbridge). In 2006 we awarded the Veteran Preferred Trophy (sponsored by Carl and Kay Widell). We worked closely with our entire Agility Committee, especially Joanne Williamson on the point systems for these awards. In 2004 we decided to make BCCA MACH ribbons available at all of our National Specialties. Karen Barratt designed and donated the ribbons for this.

Jerry Bergen, Liz Cox, Ann Krafcheck and Betty Winfield resigned in 2005. Christiana Taylor and Charles Gibson resigned in 2006. On behalf of the BCCA, we would like to thank them for their efforts and input over their years of service and wish them all the best in their future agility endeavors.

Together Joanne and I have drawn up the Agility Committee for 2006-2007. It has 14 members, drawn from every region of the United States and Canada. All of the committee's members have extensive experience in the sport having titled multiple Beardies.

"I think I have been training Beardies in agility for about 7 years. I have trained and titled 9 of my Beardies, for a combined total of at least 45 titles. I still currently train and work 8 of my dogs...trialing them at various times. I try to give them all a turn working and playing with me, because they all love to run agility. And yes, I am addicted too! I live on 10 acres in a rural area, and have a pole barn with a complete set of agility equipment. I also breed Beardies and have all Beardie agility classes with my offspring dogs. This is a lot of fun for the dogs and their owners. I also feel it helps to train the owners how to handle their dogs at home too, creating a working relationship."

Jeff has been BCCA Treasurer for several years and has put MACHs on two Beardies, Jax and Zoom, both of whom qualified in 2006 for the AKC Invitationals. Both Jax and Zoom have won the Denia Award as well. Three of Jeff's Beardies are Versatility Excellent Beardies.

Linda Porter, Hagerstown, MD
"I started training in agility with Bailey after seeing Beardies doing agility at the BCCA Specialty held in Hunt Valley, MD in 2001. We participated in our first trial in March 2002. Agility has become our main interest, taking up many of our weekends and holidays. Bailey and I have learned this sport together. He is the first Beardie I have titled in agility and is the co-winner of the BCCA Denia award for 2004. I have two other Beardies in training: Jessie, a Bailey daughter, and Toby, a Bailey son. I focus primarily on AKC agility but also do NADAC, some USDAA and am looking to do some UKC agility this year. We are also training in Rally obedience."

Michele Ritter, Saylorsburg, PA
Michele has been showing Beardies since 1980. She is probably best known as a breeder-owner-handler of BIS and Specialty winning dogs but she also has had a long standing interest in performance events, having put obedience and agility titles on a number of her home-breds. Her first agility Beardie was Zooey (Britannia How Sweet It Is) who Michele showed to her AX and AXJ titles. Her current agility dog is Zooey's son, Biff, who was the top Beardie in Excellent A standard and the Ryan award winner in Excellent A JWW in 2003. She competes primarily in AKC agility.

David Williamson, Pearland, TX
"As a former pairs skater, I experienced many years of subjective judging and the politics that went along with it. Luckily my partner and I received more good calls than not, and I've never been able to quiet the competitive side of my character. So when I first saw an agility trial and later read about its objective judging and scoring system, I knew it was for me. My first agility-trained dog (a PONS) patiently let me shove and jerk him around a few courses before he let me know how he really felt by habitually running out of the ring. I tried to learn from most of my mistakes by making sure dogs #2 and #3 (Bearded Collies) developed a love for working and for playing the fun game of agility, and I'm now gently guiding the newest Beardie in our household through the intermediate stages of training. Even with his easy-going, level-headed nature, I can tell he's often amazed at how quickly I catch on to things." David recently finished a MACH2 with Harley, a Beardie he rescued from a Houston animal shelter. He is also currently showing Darby (O'Duinnin Oh Dancin' Darby) and burning up the TX circuit in JWW while trying to convince him that contact zones are really meant to be stepped on. The youngest member of his Beardie household is, Murray, Wynsum Holdin' On To A Dream.

Between the fourteen of us we have earned 1032 Agility titles in seven of the North American Agility Organizations. Fourteen of our Beardies have earned Versatility Excellent titles and two have the Masters in Versatility.
