A Good Day Training

Jane Cooper

Just have to get excited to people who can understand.

I had today off, unusual for someone who works retail. Anyway, we decided to work the dogs up here, in a jump chute. Everyone else set-up the jump chute while I scooped da poop. (WE lay the jump chute baby gates down after each session so the dogs don't tear them down.)

Jumps were set for the proper height for the Beardies. So, for a quick giggle, I brought Dani out first. Now Dani is my low energy Beardie. We had put the tire real low, as Dani hasn't worked this stuff before. So Dani ran the chute, and through the tire, got her cookie, and was turned around, to go through again, which she did, and got her cookie. all of a sudden, Dani is racing back and forth, jumping beautifully, and going through the lowered tire, for cookies and loves. We quit while we were ahead, and I put Dani back in the house. Then brought out Bretta.

Bretta is the girl I started working in hopes that working would lead to some obedience and willingness to do stuff with me. Kim is a good 15-20 years younger than I am--she was the only one fast enough to keep up with Bretta. After running with Bretta, she wanted to know where the real Bretta, you know the one who flipped everyone off, was.

We concentrated on working over one jump and through the tire, then out around the end of the baby gates, back to the one jump and where the gates were opened, and back into the chute. And we were able to do it with voice control. Bretta is thriving with agility. WOW!!!

And then we did Sagan, who was focused, and beautiful. And then we did Em--that's when things got scary. And then Betel--Five Beardies--and they all had brains!!! Usually they play hot potato with one brain--you know, who ever has the brain when the music stops is the loser??? Unfortunately, it became obvious that Tally (Border Collie X, working NADAC open) Tilda (Border Terrier, USDAA novice title, and NADAC open in both titling and gamblers) and Penny (pound rescue Whippet) had all left *their* brains at home.

Then--we lowered the jumps to real low, and put the tire on the ground, and ran DeAnna through. She loved it, and was willing to go through the tunnel for cookies, too. she ran it once, and then decided to go back for more cookies.

The question came up--how am I going to work five, no six Beardies in agility at the same time. Answer--I won't. I'll die the first time I try it! But until then, we'll have fun.

Oh--Betel is actually doing weave poles with a little help, but all on his own! I never thought I'd be able to say that!.

Yea, it was a good day.
