Tom O'Brien is thrilled to be asked to judge the Agility Trial of the 2016 Bearded Collie Club of America's National Specialty. Since becoming an AKC Agility Judge in 2012, Beardies have been one of Tom's favorite breeds to judge because of the energy and enthusiasm they bring to every run. Few breeds seem to have as much fun.
An active AKC agility competitor since 2005, Tom and his wife Doris live in Colchester, Vermont, and have competed at agility trials with their Cocker Spaniels throughout New England and along the East Coast. During the week, Tom is an architect.

After a year of planning it all came together to be a great day. Our venue was the incredible American K9 Country in Amherst NH. Incredible facility, tons of crating, kitchen, dog tubs, dog pool, outdoor dog park and most importantly wonderful flooring. Our judge was Mr Tom O'Brien. Such a nice guy with great courses ( nested wonderfully ). He commented many times how much he loves watching Beardies run because they always look so happy. He even stuck around to be our leash runner for the tunnelers relay. Jeff Ipser volunteered to be our Chief Course builder. The switch over from course to course was seamless. We started with Fast, Standard, T2B and Jumpers. We had approximately 50 Beardies entered with over 150 runs. It was great to watch baby dogs all the way up to seniors running with such enthusiasm.
I need to thank all my fellow Beardie folks for making the day run so smoothly. Claire Cifarelli was my Co Chair and my committee Ruth Bryden, Sheila Franklin and Bob Wisner. Claire put up with me and helped with all the decisions across the board. Ruth did an incredible job as volunteer coordinator and prize/ribbon wrangler. Sheila single handed organized our relay race. Bob was a wonderful course builder/supportive hubby. And of course Joanne Williamson for taking on the huge job as trial Secretary! We never had to ask for help in the ring, Beardies peeps are great workers!
I created a new agility t shirt "Agility Facts" as a private fundraiser that sold very well. With the funds we were able to purchase Goody bags for everyone entered, breakfast, lunch and snacks free to all as well as the prizes for our always fun Relay race and worker raffle prizes.
My proudest moment came at the end of the day when my 10 year old Poppet -CH Lil'Clove Hello Poppet was awarded High in Trial in both Standard and Jumpers along with highest scoring Veteran. Jack -Lil'Clove Cap'n Jack Sparrow and Bob earned High in Trial in Fast.
BAD member of the year went to Claire Cifarelli. Claire's has such love of the breed and passion for agility. She is currently training Beardies #5,6&7! She has earned 8 MACH's on various dogs as well as obedience, rally, Barn Hunt and herding titles. I think Claire has the same happy go lucky attitude as the Beardies which makes them such great teammates.
I truly enjoyed spending time with so many folks who share the same passion for our breed and the sport. At the end of the day we all went home with the Best Dog Ever!

High Scoring Ribbons
The ever-popular and tradtional 3-dog BAD Team Relay took place after the trial concluded.
The course was made up of all tunnels.
Winner was the team with the fastest cumulative time - refusals and wrong courses were not faulted but each skipped tunnel incurred a 10-second fault.
Teams consisted of 3 dogs with 3 unique handlers.
We again had a "Young and the Restless" division and a Veteran team! Special prizes were given to the fastest all-puppy team (9-15 months) and the all-veterans (10 years and older) team.
These teams were also 3 dogs/3 unique handlers.
Dogs were at least 9 months old and had basic agility training.
T-shirts, outfits, costumes, etc. to identify your team were encouraged but optional. Special prizes were given to the Best Dressed Team!
