Agility Judge: Rhonda Crane
Our judge, Rhonda Crane, wrote a lovely
note to Beth Kortze and the BCCA. "Hi Beth - Finally home
from judging and I just wanted to drop you a quick e-mail thanking
you for having me as your Nationals judge. I have to admit your
group was one of the most cooperative and "fun" to work
with. Your generosity was unmatched and I will highly recommend
the Beardies as a superb judging assignment!!!! Please extend
my thanks to everyone. Warmest Regards, Rhonda."

By Beth Kortze and Sheila Franklin
- Gorgeous sunshine, moderate temperatures
and no wind greeted the 87 beardies and their handlers entered
in this year's National Specialty Agility Trial held in Frederick,
MD. Excitement ran high as tents sprang up overnight to form
the mobile community that is found at most dog shows. There were
first timers, those that attend when the specialty is in geographical
proximity, the diehards that trek all over the country on a yearly
basis, and a few friends from Canada! This made for a wonderful
blend of people and we heard many people comment on how much
fun it was to put names that were familiar from the BAD list
with faces and to chat with them in person!
Rhonda Crane was the ideal Judge for a specialty trial! She was
very professional but a lot of fun and was very encouraging and
supportive to competitors. Her courses were fun, challenging
and also perfect for Beardies to be able to open up and run,
and RUN they did.
The mood throughout the day was casual and laid back, but organized
and fun! Sheila Franklin served as the "Ring Princess"
coordinating workers and she commented, "It was SO easy
doing this job at this trial. Everyone was so helpful and anytime
I announced I needed someone to do something, there were several
volunteers. I would especially like to thank those that were
not even running dogs but came out and volunteered! This was
my first specialty and I had such a great time! I am so often
the only Beardie at trials I attend or only one of a very few
and it was so much fun to see TONS of Beardies run and I loved
talking training and strategy with fellow Beardie folks. My only
regret is that time went SO fast and there was not enough time
to chat with everyone!"
The day started off with the new FAST class. Since many exhibitors
were new to the class, Novice had the biggest entry! There was
lots of camaraderie as experienced handlers offered up tips and
shared plans with those that were starting. The qualifying rate
was astounding with thirty-seven qualifiers out of forty-seven
running! First places went to Jeff Ipser's Zoom, Karen Barratt's
Miller, Judi Morris' Echo, Jill Scarborough's Jack, Ruth Bryden's
Glayva, Tracy Hill's Gusto, Kelly Canham's Cole, Maryann Szalka's
Checkers, and Sonja Moore's Wally.
The Excellent classes ran next. In all there were seventy-one
runs in Standard and JWW. Ten qualified in Standard and eleven
in JWW. The first place in Excellent B 20" Standard went
to Jeff Ipser's Zoom and the first place in Excellent B P 16"
went to Barb Erway's Bella. The winner in Excellent B 20"
Jumpers was Karen Barratt's Miller and the winner in Excellent
B P 16" Jumpers was a local hero, Jan and Tony Vallone's
Chloe.
Next came the Open Classes. Three out of nine qualified in Standard
with the first place in the 20" category going to Sheila
Franklin's Bracey and the first in the 24" category going
to Miranda Mulders' Rembrandt. Five out of twelve qualified in
Jumpers. Sheila's Bracey again took first in the 20" class
and Maryann Szalka's Checkers took first in Open P 16".
Novice Standard and Jumpers finished up the "official trial"
with fifty-nine runs. Twelve qualified in Standard and twelve
in JWW. In BOTH Standard and Jumpers five teams took firsts:
Terry Manganiello's Taxi in Novice B 20", Ruth Bryden's
Glayva in Novice B 24", Tracy Hill's Gusto in Novice A 16",
Richard Masley's Cale in Novice A 20", and David Williamson's
Murray in Novice P 16". Sonja Moore's Wally took first in
Novice P 20" Standard.
Highs in Trial
Sheila Franklin's blue girl Bracey took both the Standard and
the Jumpers Highs in Trial, with scores of 100 achieved with
the fastest yards per second out of one hundred fifty-one runs.
Jill Scarborough's Jack took the High in Trial for FAST with
the best score out of forty-seven runs. He had 79 out of 80 points
and completed his run in 25.34 seconds.
-
- Beth Kortze, trial chair, enjoyed the
process of planning for and watching the trial come to life with
the help of so many great volunteers. With the knowledge and
support of Debbie Kauffman , a terrific trial secretary, Holly
Hammerle, our chief course builder, the NCBCC agility committee,
and the great volunteer crew, everything came together before
dusk on Monday. Beth commented, "It was a bit worrisome
when we found out that the weave poles in the JWW course were
positioned on a large rock! But everyone worked together to move
the whole ring so that the rock was not an issue. Thanks to all
who helped. Many who had been herding all day helped us set up,
not to mention the folks who had to move their tents to make
room for the shifted ring gating. It just goes to show that agility
people do whatever is necessary for a successful trial. I love
the look of rings that are all laid out and ready the day before
a trial. So much effort went into it and there is a sense of
accomplishment looking at the ring gating and coordinates in
their place just waiting for the event to begin the next morning."
Libby did a great job ringside determining the Highs in Trial
and making sure everyone had a chance to collect their new BAD
shirts, which are spectacular. Tien Tran was the official photographer
and many were very excited to see her agility photos. In my opinion
she is the best in the business and her pictures will surely
provide us with many wonderful memories of the day.

-
- Once the official trial ended, tunnel
after tunnel was hauled out to set up the 2007 Fun Relay. While
course builder extraordinaire Holly Hammerle was busy setting
the course, Tien was trying to organize all 80+ Beardies and
their handlers into one photo! Once the photo was completed and
the Highs in Trial awarded, the relay could get underway! There
were twelve four-dog teams and they outdid themselves in creativity
both in names and in team t-shirts! Beth Kortze made a poster
for each team that related to their team name and these were
posted along the ring fence and served as the running order.
Holly Hammerle graciously agreed to judge the relay so that Rhonda
could take a welcome break. It was great fun to watch the Beardies
ZOOM through this course. Each Beardie did the same course with
a whistle signaling when the next dog could start. It was fast
and furious with the only faults being a failure to complete
a tunnel. The relay was won by the "Bitches With Attitude"
team featuring Neil Bryden and Jura,
Sheila Franklin and Bracey, Beth Kortze
and Celia, and Casey Minner and Heart.
The 2007 specialty agility day came to a close with a wonderful
dinner at an Italian restaurant in historic downtown Frederick.
There was much laughing and teasing, some eating and drinking
and the evening culminated with the presentation of the 2007
BAD awards. Jeff Ipser was named the BAD person of the Year and
there were several BAD attitude awards handed out as well. Libby
recognized the top Beardie in each venue: Jeff Ipser's Zoom
AKC, Nancy May's Farley CPE, and Sheila
Franklin's Bracey NADAC and USDAA.
Nancy May's Farley was named the Top
BAD Beardie of the Year for all venues.
