This agility titling class is meant to be an additional test of strategy skill, accuracy, speed, timing, and distance handling, to demonstrate a dog's athletic ability and willingness to work with its handler in a fast-paced atmosphere over a variety of agility obastacles. The class may be offered once per day as an additional class at a club's option. The class is not part of the Master Agility championship titling program.
There is a maximum of 80 possible FAST Class points awarded at all levels, which is the sum of the fifteen point valued obstacles (60 points) plus a Send Bonus value of 20 points. Teams must successfully complete the Send Bonus to achieve a qualifying score, as well as a miniumum number of required points defined at each class level.
Teams will be assessed one (time) fault for every full second over SCT which will be subtracted from the total points accumulated.
FTC1 (FAST Century 1) Title - Requires the MXF title plus one-hundred ADDITIONAL Excellent B FAST Class qualifying scores of 60 points or greater.
FTCP1 (FAST Preferred Century 1) Title - Requires the MFP title plus one-hundred ADDITIONAL Excellent B FAST Class qualifying scores of 60 points or greater.

Beginning January 1, 2007, competitors in AKC
agility will have an opportunity to earn titles in a new game,
FAST (Fifteen And Send Time).
According to the published description "this agility titling
class is meant to be an additional test of strategy skill, accuracy,
speed,strategy, and timing and distance handling, to demonstrate
a dog's athletic ability and willingness to work with its handler
in a fast-paced atmosphere over a variety of agility obstacles."
In addition to the familiar Novice (NF), Open (OF), Excellent
(XF) and Masters (MXF) titles, an additional championship level
title will be offered, FAST Century 1 (FTC1). To complete a FTC1,
a dog must earn the MXF title plus 100 Excellent B FAST class
qualifying scores of 60 points or more.
Dogs may also earn a FTC2 or higher designations by qualifying in 200 or more classes with the required 60 points.
Course Description and Rules
FAST courses contain fifteen pointed obstacles worth a total of 60 points. Six of the obstacles must be single jumps valued at one point each. The point values for the rest of the obstacles will vary from 2 to 10 and are determined by the judge. Also required are a minimum of two and a maximum of three contact obstacles and a set of weave poles (6 in Novice; 9-12 in Open and Excellent). Single jumps may be placed on the course which are not pointed to aid flow. Obstacles that are naturally bidirectional (such as weave poles, the A-frame, dog walk, open tunnels and single jumps) may be taken in either direction for points unless otherwise directed by the judge. One bidirectional obstacle on the course may have dual point values but a handler must not attempt to collect these points in a back-to-back fashion. In Open and Excellent, 2-3 obstacles can be designated as a combination. All of the obstacles in the combination must be completed to earn the points. The Send Bonus sequence is made up of 2-3 obstacles which MUST be completed with the handler behind the send line in order to qualify. A table may be used as the last obstacle of the send. The dog is required to put all four paws on the table but does not have to assume a sit or down position. Obstacles making up the Send Bonus may not be used PRIOR to attempting the send. Course faults such as refusals, wrong courses, and missed contacts will be called after completion of the first obstacle of the Send sequence and will cause the team to fail the send. The handler restriction distance in the sequence depends on the level. For Novice, it is 5-10'; for Open, 10-15'; for Excellent, 15-20'. On most courses, the Send Bonus sequence will not be near the start line. Successfully completing the Send Bonus is worth 20 points. Therefore, a maximum of 80 points can be earned on course.
The number of points which must be accumulated
in order to qualify differs according to level:
Novice = 50 points
Open = 55 points
Excellent = 60 points
Standard course times are the same for all levels.
Regular SCTs are:
8" = 38 sec
12/16" = 35 sec
20/24/26" = 32 sec
Preferred SCTs are:
4" = 41 sec
8/12" = 38 sec
6/20" = 35 sec
Time begins when the dog crosses the start line. A buzzer or whistle will be sounded at SCT and the team must proceed to the designated finish obstacle to stop the clock. For every full second over SCT, a 1 point penalty will be deducted from the total accumulated by the team. With the exception of the Send Bonus sequence, course faults such as refusals are not counted. Faulted contact obstacles can be reattempted for points but only AFTER another obstacle has been done. If a handler allows his or her dog to repeat a faulted contact immediately, to repeat a contact or a set of weave poles already successfully attempted, to earn points from a dual pointed obstacle back-to-back , or to do a portion of the Send Bonus sequence before attempting the send, the judge will blow a whistle twice and the team must immediately proceed to the finish obstacle. If the team has already completed the send and has accumulated enough points before being whistled off the course, they can still qualify. Placements are determined first by the highest number of points and then by time.
Strategy
In planning course strategy, it would be very useful for you to know approximately how fast your dog is over the contact obstacles, in the weave poles, and when running and jumping. Knowing your dog's speed will allow you to make the best choices for point accumulation for your partner. In addition, you will need to decide if your goal is to get the maximum number of points possible or simply enough to qualify. The send sequence successfully completed will give you 20 points + the number of points the obstacles in the send are worth (these values will be indicated on the course map). Subtracting this value from the total points required to qualify will tell you how many points you need toearn by completing other obstacles on the course. The six winged jumps on the course are each worth one point. It is not necessary to take each individual jump to earn all 6 points; taking three of them twice or two of them three times will also earn you the six points. This is an important distinction to keep in mind as you may be able to reduce the amount of ground your dog needs to cover depending on the course design.
Unlike traditional Gamblers where course time is clearly divided into a point accumulation period and the gamble attempt, the handler in FAST has the option to do the send whenever he or she chooses. If the Send Bonus sequence is distant from the finish obstacle and the handler waits to attempt the send last, points may be lost for exceeding SCT since time does not stop until the dog crosses the finish jump. In addition, remember that the send MUST be completed before the buzzer sounds in order to qualify. It may be prudent to ask the judge during the briefing when the send is considered completed just to be sure. On most FAST courses, therefore, the best strategy is probably to proceed first to the Send Bonus sequence accumulating as many points as possible on the way and then continue back toward the finish jump earning points, until the SCT buzzer is heard or you have 80 points! The exception to this strategy is when the finish jump is in line with the send. Remember that your run is over when your dog crosses the finish jump so don't let that happen unintentionally. For this type of FAST course, you should probably plan to do the send last.
Good luck and have fun with this new game!
